Tinnitus Assessments
Tinnitus is the name given to noises in your ears or your head, which originate in the ear or brain. We cannot hear the noise which is bothering you, but we can help you to deal with it. Tinnitus occurs to most people fleetingly, but for some it can be bad enough to ‘drive you mad’. During the audiological evaluation, and sometimes separately and in more detail, we can examine the tinnitus with you and explain its nature. It can be treated and there are many techniques which may be applied to help you. The most modern of these techniques – the one we use at Professional Hearing Services - is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is a technique based on neurophysical research conducted over the past 25 years. It recognizes that the brain has 'plasticity' throughout the lifetime and can be retrained to set up new 'hard wiring'. Tinnitus nearly always starts in the ear but long term tinnitus is a brain function and can be trained out according to simple principles. These principles can be taught to you and assistance given, as necessary, with electronic 'sound generators' and counselling.
